Anatomy of the Aortic Arch:
The aortic arch is a curved segment of the aorta, the largest artery in the body. It starts at the level of the upper border of the second sternocostal articulation (a joint between the sternum and the ribs) and extends upwards and backwards before descending behind the heart. The aortic arch consists of several distinct parts, including three main branches that supply blood to various regions of the body.
Types of Aortic Arch:
Aortic arch can be divided into three types according to the ratio between diameter of common carotid artery (CCA) to the distance between the horizontal line through the top of arch and the horizontal line through the orifice of innominate artery:
a type I, less than 1;
b type II, between 1 to 2
c type III, more than 2
