Why UV-C Robots Break the Chain of Nosocomial Transmission

Nosocomial infection is under-recognised in Romania. Official hospital figures suggest 0.2–0.25%, but a 2018 European study measured 2.6%, equivalent to about 100,000 cases registered annually. The gap matters because these infections drive morbidity, mortality and cost.

Transmission requires three elements: a susceptible host, a virulent pathogen and a favourable environment. Clinicians manage the first two through diagnosis and treatment; the environment is where infection control has the most direct leverage. It is also stubborn. Many pathogens survive on surfaces for years, Gram-negative bacteria resist disinfectants thanks to their outer membrane, and older hospital architecture — small, crowded, multi-bed wards — makes thorough manual disinfection difficult. Conventional chemical cleaning has two further blind spots: it does nothing for airborne pathogens, and it does not inactivate antibiotic-resistant genetic material, which persists in the environment and passes to neighbouring bacteria through horizontal gene transfer. Since more than half of nosocomial infections are considered preventable with effective hygiene, closing these gaps is high-value work.
