Hospital doors with a cardboard honeycomb core: can they be used?

Why we chose a solid-core compound panel

Doors with a cardboard honeycomb core are often requested because they are light and inexpensive. In a hospital, however, they show their limits quickly.

The limits of cardboard honeycomb in hospitals. Low resistance to moisture, which matters where surfaces are cleaned and disinfected every day. Limited impact resistance against beds, trolleys and wheelchairs. Hardware and automations that loosen over time. Flatness that can change over the years. For intensive hospital use, it is not the right choice.

Our choice: a solid-core compound panel. Hospital Division service doors use a 40 mm, 5-layer compound panel: 0.9 mm laminate, MDF and a class 1 expanded polystyrene core. The panel stays flat, holds hinges, locks and handles firmly, and resists impacts and cleaning. Doors are supplied with an antibacterial handle.
