What are the common symptoms of mitral regurgitation?

The mitral valve is the valve between the left atrium and the left ventricle. If the mitral valve is not completely closed, some blood can flow back from the left ventricle to the left atrium. Mitral regurgitation is one of the common heart valve diseases, which can cause a series of pathological changes and clinical symptoms of the heart, and can lead to heart failure in severe cases.

Acute mitral regurgitation: In mild cases, there is exertional dyspnea (symptoms such as shortness of breath and wheezing after activity); in severe cases, there are symptoms of acute left heart failure, such as dyspnea, coughing up pink foamy sputum, and even cardiogenic shock.

Chronic mitral regurgitation: In mild cases, there are often no symptoms due to the compensatory mechanism; in severe cases, there are exertional dyspnea, fatigue, decreased activity endurance, and right heart failure in the late stage.

Primary mitral regurgitation: Patients with congenital mitral valve prolapse generally have mild regurgitation, and most patients may have no obvious symptoms. Some patients have palpitations, fatigue, postural syncope, etc., and left heart failure may occur in the late stage. Secondary mitral regurgitation: Generally, the course of the disease is long, and there are often no obvious symptoms in the early stage. When the condition is serious, in addition to the primary disease, there will be symptoms such as dyspnea and coughing up pink foamy sputum.
